For the most part there the same.

With the rapid advancement in technology, the mechanic’s job has evolved from purely mechanical, to include electronic technology. Because vehicles today possess complex computer and electronic systems, mechanics need to have a broader base of knowledge than in the past. Lately, the term “auto mechanic” is being used less and less frequently and is being replaced by “automotive technician”. In the past you could easily learn about cars without even going to automotive school, but in todays world technology is being incorporated into more and more vehicles so the days of just watching and learning are done. You have to go to automotive school to learn more in depth and get better training.

“Mechanic” ain’t high falutin’ enough, so’s they had to come up with technician fer the Japanese and Kraut cars.
